RWD at the Maryland Drupal Meetup

Tonight about twenty drupal users and developers gathered at PMG Direct headquarters in Columba, MD for what is believed to be the third Maryland Drupal Meetup. It was my first time, and I met with some of the group beforehand for dinner, which was organized by Carolyn, a developer with Takoma Park based drupal shop, Grand Junction Design.

January Philly Meetup and Drupalcamp Planning

The Philly Meetup @ZivTech was huge! There were roughly 50 people that showed up, way more than anyone was expecting. They hadn't had a meetup for a while so it came as a surprise, but it worked out just fine. The ZivTech office was a little crowded, but after splitting the large group up into 'beginner' and 'advanced' groups, things flowed a little more smoothly.

Switching from 'Vanilla' Drupal to Pressflow

We recently started on a project and began work implementing the features when we were told that it needed to be based on Pressflow. After a small moment of panic at the thought of having to redo all of the work done thus far, Dave assured me that it was a simple drop-in to replace regular 'vanilla' Drupal core with Pressflow. Still, leaving nothing to chance, I wanted to see just what these differences were and how it would effect my current code base. Was it really that simple?

Chaos Tools Modal Login

A lot of clients really dig the modal windows nowadays - probably made more popular by Facebook and other online applications that are more application than just website.

Channels for @managingnews

We've started using @managingnews for ourselves on http://news.rapidwatersdev.com and we're finding the Channels feature quite useful! It's a new take on using taxonomy but it's not quite apparent how to actually use this feature without digging a little bit. So here's a quick screencast using Screenr on how to use Managing News' Channels feature.

SEO Friend Module

Well, I was poking around in the Search Engine Optimization group on Groups.Drupal.org today, and I found a new SEO module that has some great features. Ok, so it's not brand new, but it's new to me!

Building Search Engine Optimization into Drupal Website Development

Search Engine Optimization comes in several colors, also known as hats, and flavors, let's call those implementations. On-site SEO implementation is taking what is currently on the site and tweaking it to be better read by search engines, or building that into the development of the site from the ground up. Off-site SEO implementation is usually done through building backlinks and general site popularity through viral content and other marketing concepts.

What's better than learning about Drupal? Learning about Drupal while having an ice cold one!

Dave and Jerad first got started in their Drupal career by trying to figure out a good way to give back to the community. They watched a lot of DiggNation, and thought - why not? So they ripped off the format and geared a show towards the Drupal community, giving updates on what's going on, the latest gossip, tips and tricks, and spotlighting a Drupal module (or three) every episode. They even managed to get a mention on the Lullabot podcast a few times!

HMP Communications

HMP Communications, a large Healthcare information provider and publisher, was the first major project that Rapid Waters accepted in the very early days of the company. The scale and success of this project reassured the founding members of Rapid Waters Development that starting this company was inevitable.
